Affogato and Vienna: The Illusive Coffee

My friends and I lately have been obsessed with affogato, a coffee-based dessert. It consists of espresso shot (double is better) and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. One of my best friends is also obsessed with it. Mas Anto, the barista of Blumchen Coffee in Fatmawati once generously made it for me and friends, although it was not on their menu. But they have Latte Float, an espresso-based drink with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, so, it's kind of the same thing, actually.

Another illusive item when we talk about coffee in Jakarta is vienna coffee, the name of a popular traditional cream based coffee beverage. It is made by preparing two shots of espresso in a standard sized coffee cup and infusing the coffee with whipped cream (as a replacement for milk and sugar) until the cup is full. Then the cream is twirled and optionally topped off with chocolate sprinklings. The coffee is drunk through the cream top. The right way to served vienna is hot, not cold. 




This is the vienna coffee in Black Canyon Coffee, Cilandak Town Square, Jakarta. They served it with salty crackers, cinnamon stick for stirring, and a cold, bitter jasmine tea to cleanse the palate. So far, this is the best vienna coffee in town.
