December in Bali-The Food
Nasi Campur is a common traditional dish in Bali. It usually consists of white rice, chicken, beef, fish, saute vegetable (usually Lawar), and condiments. The meat and vegetable portion usually small. Everything in Nasi Campur is usually spicy, except for the rice. I love it, because it is spicy and I find eating variety of dish is very comforting and not boring. Also, if you're not happy with the flavor of one or two dishes, you still have other options.
The best suckling pig that I've ever eat is Babi Guling Ibu Oka in Ubud, Bali. Anthony Bourdain, the host of No Reservation, a travel and food program in TLC, said that it is the best pork dish he ever tasted. And I believe him, because he travels the world for a living. But I didn't get the chance to visit Ibu Oka on my recent trip to Bali. Instead, I went to Babi Guling Candra in Jalan Teuku Umar, Denpasar. It wasn't as good as Ibu Oka, but it's not bad. Next time I visit Bali, I will not miss Babi Guling Ibu Oka. That's a promise.
My other favorites is Balinese Sate Lilit. Its main ingredients are fish and prawns, mashed together, then mixed with grated fresh coconut flesh and other herbs, then put the mix on a lemongrass sticks then grill them. Sate Lilit is usually eaten without any sauce, unlike other type of satay.
